Photo reportage of farm visits in Ecuador, March 2019

Our colleagues Jacco and Sarah visited Ecuador last month to check the production and quality of roses for Mother’s Day at farms around Quito. Their pictures show how beautiful these farms are – take a look for yourself!

The Wall of Fame

Esperance, French for ‘’hope’’ is introduced by De Ruiter Innovations.  In the vase, the colour of this romantic rose fades from cream to a delicate pale pink with light green edges; it always opens and is one of the most popular roses in our collection.

San Vicente de Paul Orphanage

Martin Altamirano and our other colleagues in Ecuador try to visit the orphanage every month. Here is an update of Martin’s visit in March.

All the children and babies are in good health, though two children did require medical treatment. One-year-old Gloria, who is hearing impaired, had an operation on her ears to improve her hearing.  She is recovering well from the operation and is responding to people talking to her.  Eleven-year-old Pamela had an operation to help correct her club foot.  The operation went well and Pamela is up and about learning to walk again step-by-step.

When a child reaches the age of eighteen, the orphanage applies for what is known as ‘’Autonomy of the Child’’. They use their network and public institutions to find the children a job. Once a child has a job, the orphanage helps them to find somewhere to live and supports them financially for a period of two to three months after which, the child supports themselves with the wages they earn.

The orphanage is currently in need of the following:

New printers for the computing room; new sinks, as the old ones are damaged and a safety risk to the children; the director also told me that the fridges in all four houses needed to be inspected and repaired.

The craftsmanship and dedication of Interplant

Interplant Roses is an international rose breeding company. Founded in 1962, this family company is now run by the third generation and its head office is here in the Netherlands.

Our colleague Shirley visited Interplant last month to take a closer look at how the company creates new varieties. Shirley found the cross-pollination process particularly interesting.

Robbert Ilsink told Shirley that they carry out one million cross-pollinations a year. They then plant 350,000 seedlings from which they select just 12,000 roses, based on the following four criteria;

  • Does the rose look like they expected when cross-pollinating

  • Colour

  • Shape of the head

  • Number of petals

The 12,000 roses are then reduced to 3,000 codes. These codes are planted in Africa and Ecuador and then tested against 25 criteria. Finally, they end up with 150 varieties, 10 of which are commercially viable.

It’s fascinating to see how this detailed and structured operation supports Interplant’s incredible dedication and craftsmanship to help them deliver success year after year.

FSQ’s Exclusive Programme
Under the FSQ Exclusive Programme, we work together with suppliers who grow roses exclusively for FSQ.  This guarantees that we have supplies of a variety all year round.  One of the varieties supplied under the FSQ Exclusive programme by Interplant is Golden Mustard.

How Humberto selects varieties for FSQ Exclusive
Director of FSQ, Humberto is always on the lookout for new varieties of roses.  This takes him to Ecuador five times a year, the most important visit being to the Expo Flor show in September.  When he finds a variety he likes he will plant about 200 of the roses to see if the variety meets his 9 conditions.  These are:
·         Vase life
·         Head size
·         Head shape
·         Leaves
·         Colour
·         How  it opens in the vase
·         Length of the stem
·         Transport
